As I suspected the initial part of the log is wined3d. Starting from the
CoGetClassObject lines it is opengl32 itself. The game seems to request a
standard double buffered r/g/b/a pixel format and it nicely gets that. It could
be that windows is less strict and returns a format with depth/stencil which is
what the game seems to like better.
