I also have this issue.  Here is some more information:

FreeBSD v6.3 (DesktopBSD v1.6)

Wine v0.9.57 from the ports collection

Nvidia driver version 96.43.05

Nvidia card type Geforce 4 MX400

1.5G RAM, plenty 'o disk

Intel P4 ID = 0xf29 step = 9

I am seeing exactly the same failure when trying to install any game under
steam.  Steam seems OK and Gecko seems fine.
