I don't have any fonts under ${HOME}/.fonts (the personal fontconfig 
font directory), but this is not a very practical advice:

$ locate .ttf | grep '^/usr/share/fonts/'  | wc -l
153

i.e. I have at least 153 truetype fonts which were shipped by
redhat to fedora 8. I have excluded /usr/share/X11/fonts/TTF/,
and other application-specific directories already.
