I have been able to work around this by using
ftp://ftp2.sierra.com/pub/patches/pc/Homeworld105Patch.exe as a launcher. After
applying it will ask if you want to run Homeworld.
Perhaps it passes some params to the executable.
Tested with wine-0.9.59 and nvidia-169.09 driver.
