Oddly today it seems to be working.  The only change is that I did a full
system update last night and have a new kernel and other odds and ends in
Fedora 8 now.  I tried it fives times and it started up and worked each time. 
The startup time is still extremely slow as compared to running on windows, but
at least its working.  I've attached the console output from one of my runs
where I opened and closed the sim twice and then exited the app.
