Similar but not identical bug on my end. It might be a different version than
Mr. Roth's? Mine is "RosettaStone AppA v3.2.11 FC3
3.2.11_StandAlone_RC4_ProdASR_v3 3/5/2008-11:37". Still V3 though.

Wine-1.0-rc1 won't install Rosetta Stone. The InstallShield Wizard loads
perfectly fine, but aborts with a windowbox saying "Install Failed -- Rosetta
Stone V3 requires that your computer is running Windows 2000 or Windows XP or
Windows Vista".

Only a little stuff came up on the console:

My Winecfg reports Windows XP with all default settings and ALSA for sound. My
system is Gentoo Linux ~amd64 running kernel 2.6.25 and Xfce4.4.2.
