It happens to me when using Xfce as well (Without Composite).
If I start up Fallout 3 in full screen on say Desktop 2 then switch to another
Desktop 5 to read some web sites, Fallout 3 will vanish and leave the audio
thread playing in the background for a while.

I've done the same thing (switched desktop, done stuff and then come back) with
other games like Morrowind, Diablo 2, Pirates of the Carribean without crashes.
Diablo 2 now leaves a nice iconized window whenever I switch Desktop, Morrowind
keep playing the music in the background for a while but the game is still
there when I switch back.
