I confirm this bug.  I've seen it with MS Word 2000 too.  But files are created
in my home directory.  My home dir is symlinked with desktop dir. I start word
from shell wrapper as: 

wine "C:\program files\microsoft office\office\winword.exe" `winepath -w "$@"`

I do remember that in the past I've seen LNK files created in the same dir as
original doc files.
