I just gave the trial version (
http://download.microsoft.com/download/aoeaok/Trial/1.0/WIN98/EN-US/AoE2demo.exe
) a try with a post-1.1.5 20080923 git. Main menu looks fine to me.

Nvidia 7950, drivers 169.12.
