Well, I seem to get the issue (partially resolved) by throttling the CPU
frequency to 1GHz (usually 2.2GHz, it's an Athlon64). I've also enabled VSync
with nvidia-settings.

This lets long audio samples play without truncation, but now mouse input is a
bit laggy. I'm trying to figure out a good combination of VSync and CPU speed
to get this running.

Leaving this open, since it might be fixable by other means.
