This is weird, after applying the wine patch listed above
(http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=8368), 

it seems that only certain saved games can be loaded. The ones that can be
loaded, will always load fine, while the those that can't be loaded results in
a "Memory could not be "written"" error, every time.

Is this a consequence of the patch? 

I'm starting to think that the game is crashing for a reason (ie. we're not
supposed to be able to save the games that crash, as they are unable to be
loaded.)
