Same thing on my system.  
Ubuntu 8.04
all updates current as of today
AMD64
nVidia Geforce 6600

It was working perfectly fine, before updates. I haven't run updates in a while
(vacation) and just ran a ton of them all at once today, and now this.  Other
things seem to be working properly.

Seems like what I'm experiencing is similar to what Linubie is getting.  These
two lines are the same.  See my attachment for more detail.
