Nick, I don't think gnome should be an issue.  I myself was using gnome,
although with a theme with not nearly as much eye candy.

It looks like you are running Rythmbox and a bunch of audio plugins that I
can't identify at the same time... try closing them all first, since it is an
Alsa audio error.  We could see where that takes us.

It may be helpful to see more of what the terminal says. Unfortunately it's
obscured by the Wine window.
