Now that I'm able to perform regression testing, I identified the
cause of the bug I mentioned in comment #6.

Somehow I erroneously reported the bug "appeared shortly before 1.0", I'm
sorry. 1.0 is fine, and 1.1.0-4 are not.

This makes me believe that the bug I observe and now located is
different from the original poster's and other commenters, who say
that 0.9.57-58 and 1.0 are affected, or that "every sound effect is
accompanied by a kind of soft scratching noise". In my case the
locomotive-like noise appears in the initial game menu (very loud) and
some scenes only (e.g. in the ship, after reaching Syberia, close to
the end, not loud). Should I open a separate bug report?
