Here's an update.
As of late Saturday, with patch, the crash has stopped. 
The microphone box now displays and works correctly using winetricks gdiplus,
and displays and partly works (and doesn't crash) using native gdiplus. 
(The microphone box is the visual part of the program that stays on the screen
and has the buttons on it, as opposed to the dictation box, which comes and
goes, and which displays text.) 
So the program is displaying behavior substantially similar to before the
regression.
