I believe this is just a rather common nvidia/xorg bug that only shows up with
800x600/960x600 modes.

first google hit on "800x600 cut off nvidia":

Option "ModeValidation" "NoXServerModes"

... fixed it for me. (newer x.org version, same nvidia driver version)
