I'm having this exact same problem.

Alexander: I've read through your comments, do you think this is a problem with
the game not behaving correctly (but managed to get away with it under Windows)
or another part of Wine causing problems? (You seemed to rule out
IDirect3DDevice9Impl_AddRef being the problem)
