This bug cannot be closed out.
USB soundcard (the only one I was able to make work after fooling around with
pulseaudio etc.) did get through the training but crashed after a very short
time. It does appear to be either a new method of alsa or kernel interacting
with wine.
I managed to get sound out of all my cards, and here's how I did it.
I re-installed the system again, and this time upgraded to the experimental
version of the kernel, which I was assured would correct the current sound
problems with my other two (non-USB) cards. I then upgraded to the most current
alsa-libs and alsa-drivers. Now sound works everywhere using Audacity without
pulseaudio (even on my experimental X-fi driver), but wine still freezes.
