I looked up what regi.sys was: InterVideo WinDVD regi.sys V 1.0.0.2.  

This dates back a long, long time ago when I was trying to get Win DVD to work
in Wine.  Wine 1.1.20 must have broken it.  (I current use Linux VLC 0.9.9).  I
do not even have the installs for WinDVD anymore.   

Anyway, I erased (moved it out of wine) regi.sys and happy camping has
returned.

Thank you all for helping me find this.

Fix action was to remove regi.sys.  Please close this ticket
