Yet another workaround which always worked great for me (when running Diablo II
in windowed mode using the '-w' switch):

Tick "[x] Emulate a virtual desktop" in 'winecfg's [Graphics] tab. This way
Diablo II never really looses it's focus and therefore won't crash.

(I'm still mentioning this for people who haven't upgraded to the newest
version, yet)
