I discovered that rendering in Textpad 4 which I had also installed under Wine
was also corrupted.

Further investigation traced the problem to my:
~/.wine/dosdevices/c:/windows/fonts
directory. 

The Mathematica installer had replaced the original fonts (if any) with a set
of Mathematica fonts but which did not appear to work properly. 

I fixed the problem by replacing the 
~/.wine/dosdevices/c:/windows/fonts
contents with the c:/windows/fonts contents from my Windows XP system that had
Mathematica installed. This restored both Textpad and Mathematica.
