In addition, note that this issue did not appear when I tried to install from
the not-up-to-date Windows installer (downloaded from
http://www.eveonline.com/download/windows.asp): after the splash screen, the
logon screen was displayed. However, the patching process of the client failed,
so I had to try with the full and up-to-date EVE installer (from
http://games.chruker.dk/eve_online/server_status.php)... Which does not pass
the splash screen.
