Due to the recent trouble with the fglrx driver, I've been trying to run this
game with the open source ATI driver. The game loads, the main window opens and
then it stays stuck without having drawn anything to itself.

I wasn't going to say anything, but when I tried running it with the -dx8 flag,
it did the same thing, except the error box described in this bug popped up in
addition.

I'm using wine 1.1.15.
