Holy crap, you're right! I just tried using a different nocd crack (I'm not
sure whether posting links to nocds is all right, so I'll just say it's the one
entitled "Vampire - Bloodlines v1.2 [ENGLISH/GERMAN] No-CD/Fixed EXE" you can
download from GCW) and the game did launch!

That's... Interesting, to say the least. IIRC Bloodlines uses SafeDisc copy
protection.
