0.9.47 that actually works

this is a backport of 793453f768025789f791edbcee9299b4c5d73882 that seems to
actually work.

It consists of 

c702a91a3ca605637577281f78a1dc61dd067e06
27cb7c72747507d495e3547d920b3330e24e1da9
793453f768025789f791edbcee9299b4c5d73882

applied in succession, but disregarding tests and protocol version.
Again, this is just to help with regression testing.
