The same problem also occurs with the Football 2007 Strawberry demo,

To reproduce it without the self-extracting installer,
unzip the demo and run the commandline

(extracted from a +process log, though I did have to modify kernel.dll to
print out all the arguments, not just the first few)

I'll attach a +relay log taken from just before it started doing
anything with gdi32.
