One more thing what I have noticed while installing 3ds Max 2008  in "Ununtu
8.10
desktop 64 bit" is that Wine installer picks only 32 bit version on 3ds Max.
When I install the same in Windows, 3ds Max gives the option of 32 bit if WinXp
is of 32 bit and  it gives 64 bit option if Win Xp is 64 bit OS.
But in my 64 bit Ubuntu, only 32 bit 3ds Max gets activated. 64 bits remains
deactivated and even if the radio buttons are clicked, it doesn't work at all.

If you can investigate by trying a trial version of 3ds Max from
www.autodesk.com
then that would be great. Pls let me know if you have any queries.
