That's Bug 10016 (which oddly, has starting affecting my setup, which it didn't
before).  As a workaround, you can open some other program, like Wine Notepad,
with Wine first (and keep it open), run the following command, then launch the
game:
ps -C wineserver -o pid= | xargs renice 19 --pid

Update on this bug: the flickering issues seem to have gotten worse; there's
now flickering in-game as well as on the "buy now" screen.  The game is also
still unplayably slow.
