I started applying the patches and compiling before reading this message. I
downloaded the patches to /tmp/patch and then did

git apply /tmp/patch/*
configure
make depend && make

I think that this does the same as the commands that you posted, but I hope
that you correct me if this is wrong. (Make depend is probably not necessary.)
