I had the same problem... I did solve it even though im not 100% sure if this
is the cause...

copied c:/windows/fonts from an XP SP2 machine, pasted it in my Slackware 12.2
machine.

Used the font installer and installed the fonts. At the beginning this didnt
work but after i uninstalled wine and later on recompiled again it worked
flawlessly...

My advice is to try, 1st install the fonts, uninstall wine (if installed),
compile, install.

method of installing was:
./configure 
make depend && make
make install

also worked with:

./tools/wineinstall

Please post back if it worked or not since I feel that this could be another
instance of bug 5253 (Starcraft/Diablo/Battle.net crashes from font metrics
problem).
