Changing audio settings did not change the situation, but I was able to play my
first race without freeze forcing the execution on a single cpu/core with the
following start command (as suggested at this page
http://www.zefix.tv/linux_wine_racing_simulations/FrontPage):
taskset -c 1 env WINEPREFIX="/home/andreak/.wine" wine "C:\Sierra\GPL\gpl.exe"
I suggest who has the problem to try such option.

PS my notebook has a Centrino 2 Duo P8400 and I've chosen to use the second
core for playing the game.
