This happens to me as well:

Vent 3.0.4 client (win 9x version)
Fedora 10 x86_64, installed from disk, updated
on mainboard sound card, no second sound card

Delay happens when Vent is ran through both WINE 1.1.15 installed through yum
and in a WINE-git build of 1.1.15, only change made in my WINE-git was addition
of patch for >4G RAM.

WINE cfg audio settings are:
Alsa, Hardware Acceleration: Emulation, Driver Emulation box checked.

Vent setup:
no direct sound, in or out (default wave mapper for both)
PTT box checked, set to left ctrl key
direct input to detect hotkey box unchecked
