I *think* that
69cbb57bfde091039b30050cee8d17374b1da58f is the first bad commit (it results in
freezes at character loading about 20% of the time) - although to be sure, one
would probably need to test all the commits around that point a couple dozen
times (since the freezes at that stage in git history seem to occur
probabilistically, it's possible that some commits I marked as "good" weren't
really 100% good).
In any case, this is the final git bisect output:
