I have never encountered this problem running poser under Windows 2000 or XP. 
Have you updated Poser to SR3? (it will show as version 7.0.4.220 under
Help>About Poser) Also make sure your video drivers are up-to-date.

I'm currently running it on the KDE desktop under Wine 1.1.21 patched per Bug
13066
