I've recently upgraded Witcher 1.0 to 1.4 on Wine 1.1.21 and do not experience
this problem. My video card is an Nvidia 8800GTS 512. I'm using the official
witcher.exe 1.4 executable (which anyone with a registered copy of an older
version of the game can download) and not one of the cracked versions floating
around. So I can't comment on the cracked versions of 1.4, only on the official
one. 

Before I upgraded to 1.4, I did however use a cracked version of 1.0 to get
around the TAGES bug. It did not suffer from this problem.
