John, Ken, thank you for looking at Barnes and Noble eReader in wine. There
appears to be no other way to view *.pdb ebooks bought of bn.com in Linux.

I had the same problem and your workaround worked for me: Windows 98 mode,
override wininet.dll to the one that came with the app, and download
iertutil.dll and normaliz.dll from the net.
