Yes same problem still occurs. :-(

Here is what has been done:
- check wine version with dpkg:
$ dpkg -s wine | grep Version
Version: 1.1.31~winehq0~ubuntu~9.04-0ubuntu1

- move ~/.wine directory to safe place

- install game (no problem)
-> at this point game does not start

- install latest game patch (no problem)
-> at this point game does not start


Please note that playing latest game patch on a .wine directory with directX
previously installed does work.
