Confirming I have the same problem, tested with the latest Git.

The following might be useful:

Windows (Vista and 7) users seem to be having the same problem, as per:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1002950

The problem there seems to be fixed by making sure the Steam service is the
latest version, and is running.

By default the Steam service isn't used in Wine, as it isn't required in Win XP
(Wine's default reported OS).

The game and/or Steam seem(s) to detect the OS as Vista (as reported by the
warning about graphics driver versions that Steam gives when starting the
game).

To try to get around this, I set Wine's reported Windows version to Vista,
which makes Steam install the Steam service.  The service now definitely starts
automatically when Steam starts, however the game still fails with the same
error.
