Sorry, but IMO, pulse is a non-solution because it breaks more than it fixes.

Sounds like your dmix is broken, in which case you're comparing apples and
oranges.

The question remains, are those knobs and twiddles actually necessary for a
fully-functional ALSA driver? So far no one has answered that question.
