tenth draft, works better with directories and symlinks to directories

This draft addresses feedback from Alexandre Julliard.
It adds tests for directories and symlinks to directories.
Needs to be split up into about five pieces.
Only tested on Ubuntu 8.04 which lacks xattr support;
tests pass on Windows Vista.
