Good call!...although strangely, directx9 runtime (and .NET 2.0) were actually
installed previous to the installation of the game itself. Taking your insight
onboard however and reinstalling directx9 with winetricks, did actually get the
game running. I'm not sure exactly what may be at play here, but, I'll redo the
installation a few times and see if I can ascertain why reinstalling directx
apparently fixes it.
