After further trial and error, HL2 runs perfectly when Wine sound driver is set
to ALSA.  Mandriva 2010 has a good implementation of PulseAudio, so switching
from OSS (in winecfg) is as simple as a click for me.

Not 'fixed' just workaround for those who can use it.
