I think this bug can be closed.

I wasn't able to test with Wine 1.2rc3 (the last release prior to bug 23263
being fixed) since the .deb package for that isn't available from
http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/archive/ubuntu/jaunty/

However I reverted to Wine 1.1.42 and got the same message as in the original
bug description above. Updating to Wine 1.2, all the demos run as I mentioned
in comment #6.

So it's most likely that bug 23263 was actually a duplicate of this one. If
anyone wants to confirm without a huge ~72MB download, you can get the d3dim
samples only (source and binaries) from
http://rapidshare.com/files/410551404/d3dim_samples.zip (~5.5MB)
