Great, this was something along the lines of what we're looking for. It is a
tiny bit extruded (as we're actually communicating via dosbox)...but that in
itself might be a good thing ; we can read the dosbox source. I've already
grabbed the GOG release (after doh123 nominated it as a possible), and the 11,2
doesn't really like it (32->8 color mode rubbish but I haven't fiddled yet) -
I'll see if I can recreate the 'all working' scenario Rens posted first.

Extremely helpful to know the exact situation wrt windows/drivers here, thanks
for that - it helps remove speculation.
