I have a problem with this same description, although by "load" my case means
the "loading to game menu". Wine and Steam stay running, but the game itself
crashes to desktop. A solution to get past it was setting the -nosound option
from Steam. And then the game plays all the way through.

I just tried using 'pasuspender' to no avail. I am using PulseAudio on
Mandriva 2010. (Kernel 2.6.31.6 Wine 1.1.36 fglrx 8.68.2/9.12) And since 2009,
it copes well with Wine set to OSS.

Other games like 'Homeworld: Cataclysm' and 'F.E.A.R.' don't seem to have this
problem at all. (Wine+OSS -> PulseAudio)

Steam games maybe expect lower-level access for sound???
