You're correct Thomas, the bug is at the Ubuntu side, however we can't solve
this properly until we have true multiarch support in the package manager. 
This is a project that has been a long time coming, but now it appears like it
won't be integrated into the distribution until Lucid + 1, or October.

In the meantime I'm going to experiment with Erich's patch as a temporary
workaround for the next release -- is there anything in it you see that would
be bad?  Thank you for commenting :)
