The open radeon driver has 3D support for all chip models (R600 & R700 not
entirely complete) except the very latest (Evergreen). You can see that at
<http://www.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature> (was already linked in comment #3).
I'm running several 3D applications with hardware acceleration on my systems.
So, no, the radeon driver does not only support 2D.

Now something different, for older models of the Radeon chips, the GL_VENDOR
seems to be different and looks like:
OpenGL vendor string: DRI R300 Project        
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R300 (R300 4E45) 20090101 AGP 8x
x86/MMX+/3DNow!+/SSE TCL
OpenGL version string: 1.5 Mesa 7.6.1
Please make sure, that any patch recognizes them too.
