Something like this happens to me, but only when launching from Steam.
If I run the game (installed via steam) outside of steam,
it launches fine.  I have to set a virtual desktop in winecfg
or the screen goes crazy right after the login dialog pops up.
The game then plays fine for ten minutes or so.
The only native thing I had to install was vcrun2005 (for the C++ runtime).
