In wine-1.2 the demo crashes on start up due to:
Call from 0x7b836e02 to unimplemented function d3dx9_36.dll.D3DXCreateSphere

So this bug is currently blocked by bug 22918. Installing directx9 with
winetricks will work around it, but the demo only shows a blank screen and the
terminal is spammed with
fixme:d3d:state_wrap (WINED3DRS_WRAP0) Texture wrapping not yet supported
