Well.  It's been a busy year.  But I return to this at last.  The problem is
still there, even though I have upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04.

Note (above) that the file does play in IrfanView; I just have to click on four
repetitions of the error message in order to reach that point.  The file also
plays in Ubuntu's Movie Player and in various programs in Windows.

I did download and run wintest.exe.  But I'm talking about a problem that
arises in Ubuntu, not Windows.
